LWF Executive Committee in Kraków
On 15-16 November 2022, the Executive Committee of the Lutheran World Federation met in Kraków.
Selection of the venue for the meeting was not a coincidence, as it was linked to preparations for the Thirteenth General Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation, which will be held in that city in September 2023. The Committee is made up of the: President, Vice-Presidents, Chairperson of the Finance Committee, Chairperson of the Committee for World Service, Chairpersons of the specified Committees.
The Executive Committee met at the City Hall of Krakow, located in the Wielopolski Palace.
While the Committee was in Kraków, the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland, Bishop Jerzy Samiec, the International Officer Anna Wrzesińska and the Communication Officer Agnieszka Godfrejów-Tarnogórska were also present. Kristen Opalinski, who designed the logo of the Thirteenth General Assembly and is responsible for preparing the visual identity, was also in Kraków.
The session on Tuesday was opened by the LWF President Archbishop Dr Panti Filibus Musa. The members of the Committee were welcomed by the Bishop Jerzy Samiec. Discussions included the LWF's humanitarian support for Ukraine, the LWF budget for 2023, and the LWF Assembly in Kraków. A separate report on the status of preparations for the Assembly was given by Assembly Coordinator Maryssa Camaddo.
During the visit in Kraków, LWF President Archbishop Panti Filibus Musa, LWF General Secretary Rev. Dr Anne Burghardt and Presiding Bishop Jerzy Samiec met with the Mayor of the City of Kraków, Prof. Jacek Majchrowski, and thanked him for the city's support and involvement in the organisation of the General Assembly.
Throughout the time in Kraków, the Executive Committee gathered for morning prayers at St Martin's Evangelical Church in Kraków and visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim.
The Committee also toured the ICE Congress Centre, which will be the venue for the Thirteenth LWF General Assembly. A contract with ICE was officially signed.
Later on Wednesday, a meeting was held with authorities of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland. Among those present were members of the Synodal Council, the Consistory, the Bishops, members of the Local Assembly Planning Committee, a representative of the LWF Council, members of the Kraków Parish Council and staff of the Local Assembly Office. During the meeting at St Martin's Church in Krakow, the General Secretary welcomed the guests and presented the mission and activities of the LWF, while the Secretary for Europe, Rev. Dr Ireneusz Lukas, spoke about the European context in which the communion operates. Assembly Coordinator Maryssa Camaddo and Head of Communication Rev. Árni Svanur Daníelsson spoke about previous Assemblies and outlined plans for the General Assembly in Kraków.
LWF General Secretary Rev. Dr Anne Burghardt, Director of the Department for Planning and Coordination Szabolcs Lörincz and Presiding Bishop Jerzy Samiec signed a cooperation agreement for the organisation of the Assembly between LWF and the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland.
